Licensing Overview

Initial Licensure by Examination:

Aspiring nurses must complete a board-approved nursing program and pass the NCLEX exam. The application process includes:

• Submitting an official transcript.
• Registering for the NCLEX with a $200 fee.
• Completing the online application with a $100 fee.

Licensure by Endorsement:

Nurses licensed in other states can apply for licensure by endorsement in South Dakota. Requirements include:

• Optional temporary permit available for an additional $25.​

License Renewal

Renewal Process:

• Licenses must be renewed biennially.
• The renewal fee is $115.

Practice Requirements:

• Nurses must verify 140 hours of practice in any 12-month period or 480 hours over the past six years.
• If unable to meet this requirement, a refresher course may be necessary.​

Continuing Education

• RNs and LPNs: No continuing education is required for license renewal.
• APRNs: Must maintain national certification in their specialty area.​
