A Guide to Nursing Licenses and Renewals in Maryland
Obtaining a Maryland Nursing License by Examination
Step 1: Education
Maryland offers numerous approved nursing programs, including Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and Accelerated BSN programs for those with a prior bachelor's degree. Graduates from accredited out-of-state programs can also apply.
Step 2: Application
Apply online through the Maryland Board of Nursing's application portal. A valid Social Security number is required. The application fee is $100. Register for the NCLEX via the Pearson VUE website or by calling 1.866.496.2539, which incurs a $200 fee.
Step 3: Official Transcripts
If you graduated from a Maryland-based program, your school will send your transcripts directly to the Board. Out-of-state graduates must verify their school's approval and request the submission of transcripts via email.
Step 4: Criminal Background Check (CBC)
All applicants must complete a criminal history check. Fill out the required form and visit an authorized location for fingerprinting. If you are outside Maryland, request a fingerprint card from the Maryland Board and mail it, along with a $31.25 check to the CJIS Central Repository.
Step 5: NCLEX Examination
After eligibility is confirmed, the Board will notify Pearson VUE about your NCLEX exam. This test assesses your knowledge across various nursing topics, including Safe Care, Infection Control, and Pharmacological Therapies. Once you pass, your license will be issued. In the event of a failure, you can retake the exam in 45 days but must re-register and pay the $200 fee again.
Licensing via Endorsement (for RNs with Existing Licensure)
To apply for endorsement in Maryland, you need a Social Security number. Submit your online application with a fee of $100. Ensure your original state license is verified through the NURSYS system for a fee of $30 or directly from the state if not participating. You are also required to undergo a CBC as per previous instructions.
Renewing Your Maryland Nursing License
Step 1: Renewal Timing
Licenses are valid for two years. Nurses born in odd years will renew in odd years, and those born in even years will renew in even years, by the 28th of their birth month. Expect a renewal notice approximately three months before your license expiry.
Step 2: Continuing Education
A one-time completion of an implicit bias training course is mandated for license renewal in Maryland. Additionally, RNs and LPNs must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years. Alternatively, they can have 1,000 hours of active nursing practice within the last five years or have graduated from an approved nursing program within the last five years. APRNs are required to maintain their national certification.
Step 3: Renewal Application
To renew your Maryland registered nurse license, submit your application alongside a $136 fee. This fee includes a $26 assessment by the Maryland Health Care Commission.
