Unit Details: James Surg Onc is a mixed acuity unit that cares for both PCU and Med Surg patients. This is a very busy surgical floor. All perm staff is PCU trained.
Staffing & Scheduling: • Staffing Ratios: Goal is 1:4, but can be 1:5 • Weekends: variable based on unit needs • No set/blocked scheduling as that is not something we offer our permanent staff • If you accept a 12D/N rotating contract, you may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination of both, depending on the department's needs. Shift assignments are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period, but changes are not guaranteed and are based on staffing priorities at that time. • Self-schedule requests: you will enter your schedule requests so we can see your preferred schedule before balancing and posting the final schedule • Orientation: First week is Mon - Fri dayshift. Second week is 36hrs of on-unit orientation with a preceptor • Float Required: to other acute care Oncology units
Experience & Patient Care: • 2 Years of Experience Required • Patient Age group: Adults, Geriatrics • Patient Diagnoses: Surgical Oncology (breast, thyroid, melanoma), Hepatobiliary (liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract cancers, neuroendocrine), Colorectal (colon, rectal cancer), Plastics (reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma), Ortho surgery, Cardio Thoracic surgery. Of note this is a mixed acuity unit may have MS and/or PCU acuity. Required PCU work experience. • Daily Census: 36 • Number of Beds: 36
Special Procedures/Unit Details: • Chemotherapy • Blood transfusions • IV Antibiotics • Oncologic emergencies cytokine release syndrome • Insulin drips • Heparin drips • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls • Chest tube care
Special Equipment: • B450 monitors • GE telemetry system • Bladder Scanner • Alaris pumps • Stryker beds
Interdisciplinary Support: • IV Teams, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Interpretation Services, Radiology, Social Services, Rapid Response Teams, Pharmacy, Transportation, Unit Secretary
Additional Requirements: • RNs must have valid compact or state license in hand at time of submission. • Education must be from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program. • Reference Requirements: 2 professional references are required. At least 1 reference must be from a manager/director or someone in a formal leadership capacity (e.g., a supervisor). Charge RN acceptable for 2nd reference. No coworker references accepted. • Former employees are eligible for a travel assignment once they have been away from the facility for 6 months or more. • Current employees are ineligible to be hired as a traveler at any Ohio State University hospital location.
